Food

“When we buy food and throw it away, we are literally taking food off the shelves of the global food marketplace. We’re therefore taking food out of the mouths of the hungry.”
— Tristram Stuart, Environmental activist

The Trussell Trust

The Trussell Trust operate three ways to donate food:

  1. Directly to your local food bank – find your nearest one here.

  2. At collection points in supermarkets across the country (eg. Tesco).

  3. By hosting a collection at your school, church or business for your local food bank.

Take a look at what’s in a food parcel to see what items to donate, and don’t forget that food banks also accept essential non-food items such as toiletries and hygiene products, helping people in crisis to maintain dignity and feel human again.

The Felix Project (for businesses with excess food)

The Felix Project work hard to provide food for the most vulnerable Londoners, who are struggling.

If your business has surplus food available, they can collect and redistribute from their depots in Park Royal, Enfield, Poplar and Deptford.

They collect:

  • Fresh produce – veg, fruit, bread, salad, etc.

  • Ambient produce – tins, packets, boxes, eggs etc.

  • Chilled products – raw meat/fish, dairy products, ready meals, drinks, etc.

  • Frozen foods

  • Food to go – sandwiches, salads, soups, etc.

Please fill in this form or contact them on 020 3034 4350 / supply@thefelixproject.org

Olio app

OLIO connects neighbours with each other and with local businesses so surplus food can be shared, not thrown away. This could be food nearing its sell-by date in local stores, spare home-grown vegetables, bread from your baker, or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. For your convenience, OLIO can also be used for non-food household items too.

To make an item available, simply download the app (which is free), add a photo, description, and when and where the item is available for pick-up.

FareShare (for businesses)

FareShare is the UK’s national network of charitable food redistributors, and is made up of 18 independent organisations. They take good quality surplus food from right across the food industry and deliver it to more than 10,500 frontline charities and community groups.

Food bank donations in-store

A number of leading UK supermarkets allow you to donate food in their stores.

Tesco has food collection points at 450 of their stores. Morrisons customers can pick up pre-packed bags of groceries — 'Pick Up Packs' — in branches (between £1 and £3) designed around the needs of local food banks. You pay for it at the till along with the rest of your shopping and it's then collected by volunteers working for the food bank. Asda have donation trollies in stores — find your nearest branch. Waitrose have food bank collection points in all their stores (apart from Shell and Welcome Break shops).
